Without a mother’s specimen, the lab can detect fatherhood with 99.9% accuracy or higher. However, at least one parent or legal guardian must give their consent for a minor to take the test. The male must obtain approval from someone (generally the mother) who is permitted to sign on behalf of the child if he is not the child’s legal guardian or father at the time of the paternity test.
