In order to determine the biological father of a child and obtain the results for legal reasons, such as collecting child support from the other parent, a woman or man must take a legal paternity test. Legal DNA testing may be required for a child born to unmarried parents in order to have the father’s name added to the kid’s birth certificate or to be eligible for Social Security survivor payments if the father passes away.
